Pehr Henrik Ling, the father of Swedish gymnastics and a member of the Swedish Academy, initiated the government’s establishment of Kungliga Gymnastiska Centralinstitutet, GCI (The Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics), in Stockholm in 1813. Today it is known as The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH), situated next to Stockholm Stadium, and is Sweden’s leading knowledge centre for sport, physical activity and health.

It is the world’s oldest university college in the field of Sport.
Physical education teachers, coaches and health educators are trained here. GIH also conducts high-quality research in the field of sport, physical activity and health, often in close cooperation with the sports movement, public and private stakeholders within the field, as well as with Swedish and international universities and university colleges Campus.
The 28th-30th of October 2011 the Nordic championships of Irish dancing will take place in these historic halls!
There is a dance studio with mirrors where the workshops will be held, there is also a special room for warming up and there are changing rooms with showers. Please note that there are not separate storage rooms for different dance schools.
The competitions will be held in a big room with an elevated (60 cm's) wooden stage, around the size of: 12 m x 8 m.
Entrance to the stage will be from stage right hand side for solo and team competitions. During The Show's competitions and performances, Figure dance, Dance Drama & Show Choreography, entrance can be made fro both sides of the stage.
There is a café selling light food and snacks.
Entrance tickets for the public can be bought at GIH's entrance door. There will be signs to GIH and to the Nordic Championships in Irish dancing at the subway station: Stadion. It will also be possible to buy tickets to Saturday evening's: The Show, there.
